On Friday, May 12, from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. the Port of Bremerton Commissioners and the Soroptimist International of Port Orchard will celebrate the official opening of the new playground at the Marina Park located on the waterfront at Port Orchard.
This community partnership project was jointly developed, funded and constructed by the Port of Bremerton and the Soroptimists of Port Orchard. Consisting of state of the art play features, the playground will provide a fun and safe place for children of all ages to gather and play in a unique waterfront setting. Commissioner Mary Ann Huntington, President of the Port Commission, remarked, “I have had the vision of a children’s playground at the Marina Park for many years. The coming together of the Port and the Soroptimists to complete this project is a fantastic example of what can be accomplished with dedicated community partners. The Port will continue to look for other similar opportunities.”
The new playground fills a need to provide a child friendly place at a location that sees a large amount of community use, especially during the summer months. In addition, the playground will add to the already superb reputation of Port Orchard as a boating tourist destination bringing more visitors to the city. Billi Gurnsey, President of the Soroptimists of Port Orchard, remarked, “As I have become more involved in various areas of our community, I realized that it frequently takes several groups working together to make and keep a community as special as Port Orchard is. Between the Rotary Clubs, Soroptimist, Kiwanis, Chamber and other organizations working together we all make this a better place to live. This playground is a collaboration that will make the Port Orchard waterfront a better place for our youth. With the efforts of Soroptimist International of Port Orchard and the Port of Bremerton, children will now have a playground downtown. Soroptimist is proud to be a part of this exciting new addition to our waterfront park.”
